What's new at LJMU
We know the majority of our students will be returning to campus this September after a summer away from the university.
Whether you’ve been working, interning, travelling, or relaxing, here’s what’s new for the academic year ahead.
Renamed LJMU Libraries and updated support
Our new libraries have been renamed to the City Campus Library (formerly Avril Robarts) and Mount Pleasant Campus Library (formerly Aldham Robarts).
From September the libraries will deliver all services, including academic writing support and IT support from the two campus locations.
The Student Life Building will still offer spaces to study and IT support.
For all in person Library services and Academic Skills support, head to the City Campus or Mount Pleasant Campus Libraries. You can find out more on the LJMU Library website.
Sport membership revamp: LJMU Move
For the fourth year in a row, LJMU has reduced the cost of its physical activity, wellbeing and gym membership and combined this into the LJMU Move membership.
New for this academic year, the student LJMU Move membership is just £40 for the whole academic year and gives you access to a variety of fitness, sport, and wellbeing activities, including the gym and classes.
From open water swims, couch to 5K programmes, racquet sports, intramural leagues & ladders in basketball, netball, football and chess, to LJMU’s 120-station gym, and specialist programmes such as Healthy Lifestyles, Empowering Women, Nutrition Workshops and Coach Education events, the LJMU Move membership aims to encourage greater physical activity and wellbeing among our students and staff.
Memberships run from 8 September 2025 to 31 August 2026. Check out LJMU Move on our webpages.
Multi-Factor Authentication
All students now need to use Multi-Factor Authentication. You won't be able to sign in to Microsoft Office 365, which includes emails, Teams and Word, without it.
To ensure you have access, you can update your verification details to use Multi-Factor Authentication here.
Changed your phone over summer?
No problem, visit our Multi-Factor Authentication webpages to find out how to update your authenticator method.
Struggling to use Multi-Factor Authentication or locked out of your student account?
Our IT support team is available to ensure you can still access your LJMU account. Contact them via our IT Support webpages.
Change Please Coffee
LJMU is changing its coffee provider to Change Please, a UK-based social enterprise and coffee brand dedicated to tackling homelessness through high-quality coffee.
From the beginning of the academic year, Change Please coffee will be available in the Mount Pleasant Library (formerly Aldham Robarts) Pavilion Café, John Lennon Art and Design Café, and James Parsons Social Zone Café.
LJMU aims to make a meaningful difference in our local community by the new partnership.
Like the university, Change Please are also committed to sustainability which means their packaging and cups are compostable, recyclable and biodegradable.
Changes to our bins and waste collection across campus
Over the summer months our bins have received their very own glow-up across campus. We’ve rolled out these changes to ensure that we can reduce waste and increase recycling on campus.
We’re now collecting rubbish in separate bins for:
- General waste
- Food
- Paper and card
- All other recycling (plastics, metals, glass, cartons)
You’ll notice different bins that now allow you to dispose of your rubbish in these separate categories and we’ve added signage to help explain what can and can’t go in each one.
You might find that some bins are also in different locations than you might be used to, but we’ve strategically mapped out our bin placements to ensure everyone has reasonable access to them across campus.
Stay safe on campus with the SafeZone app
SafeZone is our new free safety and wellbeing app that allows you to contact Campus Services and Security for assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, when you’re on campus. It can be downloaded to your smartphone via the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. Simply type SafeZone into your search.
The app is easy to use and highlights how to contact campus security in:
-
An emergency
-
For first aid
-
For non-urgent campus assistance
We’re encouraging all students and staff to download the SafeZone app so that you can contact Campus Services and Security easily, and so that the university can communicate directly with you if you are on campus during an incident or emergency.
Updated student support
As part of our approach to keep all our students safe on campus, we’ve also outlined and updated our Sexual Harassment and Misconduct guidelines on our webpages. The guidance includes how to report an incident via our Report + Support tool, measures we have put in place, including compulsory training for all students and staff, plus the support services we provide to our students.
Henry Cotton Building transformation: relocation of teaching
We are delivering a major new project to transform our Henry Cotton Building. While the works are carried out, some teaching in the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science will take place in City Square on Tithebarn Street and elsewhere on campus. Student should check their timetables carefully for the new locations of any teaching, or other uni activities, while the Henry Cotton Building is not in use.
