SafeZone App

Helping you feel safe on campus

At LJMU, your safety is our top priority. To give students and staff quick access to help whenever it’s needed, we're introducing the SafeZone app.

What is SafeZone?

SafeZone is a mobile app that connects you with the University’s Security Team at the touch of a button. Whether you need urgent help, first aid, or just some advice, SafeZone ensures support is always nearby.

Key features

  • Emergency alert – Contact campus security immediately in an emergency.
  • First aid call – Request medical help anywhere on campus.
  • Help call – Get non-emergency help or advice.
  • Check-in – Share your real-time location with security if you’re working late, travelling alone, or in higher-risk areas.
  • Notifications – Receive instant safety updates and alerts from the University.

Why use SafeZone?

  • Faster response times in emergencies
  • Peace of mind when working late or travelling alone
  • Direct communication with our security team

How to download the SafeZone app

The SafeZone app is free to all students and staff at Liverpool John Moores University.

If you own an Android device, you can download it via Google Play.

If you have an iOS device, you can download it from the App store.

Once downloaded, register an account with your LJMU email address.

Making the most of your SafeZone app

Checking-in

If you feel unsafe when alone or in a particular area, you can use the app's check-in feature to share your location.

You can also set a check-in timer that you disable yourself. This is especially useful when walking home or working alone. If the timer runs out before you switch it off, an alert will be raised and your location shared.

Location services

To make full use of all the features, we advise you allow location services on your device. Stay ‘checked in’ while on campus or in university buildings. Your location is only visible when you are on university premises and checked in. You will also be visible when you have an Alert active outside of these areas.

SafeZone can provide useful location-based functionality when you're not on campus. For example, notifying you of accidents or emergencies in the local area.

Please note:
Shared location data is deleted after 30 days. The exception to this is data collected for visa engagement compliance. We may be required to keep this information for longer by UK Visas and Immigration.

App power management settings

Some Android devices stop apps from running in the background to save battery life.

If SafeZone is stopped in this way, your device will no longer update us with your check-in information. To prevent this, change your Android power management settings to ‘Do not optimise battery usage’.

Guidance is available on how to update your phone’s App Power Management settings. The Don’t kill my app website provides screen-by-screen instructions for different types of mobile devices.
