IT software and support changes for students

Ahead of the new standard academic year, IT Services are sharing some important updates to their student offer which students might ask staff about. 

Here's an overview: 

Accessing software on student PCs

Over the summer the team has been rebuilding student PCs across campus to implement the latest update to Windows 11.

A significant change to the student PCs is how a user will now run software. It was previously launched from the LJMU App Player but can now be found in the ‘Search’ box on the taskbar.  

New printer app

There is also a new app for changing printers, for example when connecting to the poster printer in the libraries or Student Life Building.

Users should search for ‘Print’ and select ‘PrintMap (On Campus)’, you can then connect with the required printer from here.

Update to opening PDFs

Lastly is an update to the way PDFs open, if these are opened from the web these will open in the browser. If they are opened from the file explorer they will open with Adobe Acrobat, when prompted you’ll be required to sign in with your LJMU account: username@ljmu.ac.uk 

Students can now find IT support in the Student Life Building

Face-to-face student support from the team is now based on the upper ground floor of the Student Life Building. Library staff will continue to provide first-line IT support and IT referral services at both the City Campus Library and Mount Pleasant Campus Library.

At the SLB, students will be able to get enhanced support with their devices or accessing LJMU software, and they can also access our Digital Studio, where they can make use of high spec computers, 3D printing, loan Virtual Reality headsets, or use our podcasting facilities.

Students will also be able to call the IT team if they’d prefer to get help over the phone during the day. They can call 0151 231 5555.

Students can still get IT help from wherever they are by using the online IT guides, logging a request for help through LJMU Assist, or chatting to our AI assistant LJ for 24/7 support.
