Study opportunities for Service Leavers
For any service leaver or current serving member of the Armed Forces, the transition into higher education might seem like a daunting proposition.
Here at LJMU, we recognise that your service and time spent in the Armed Forces has provided you with a range of skills and attributes that will enable you to excel in your studies at university and to reach your potential as you take the next step into civilian life. We can guide you through every step of the way, from your initial application right through to graduation, plus careers advice for your future.
Why study at LJMU?
We offer more than 350 undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, plus research opportunities. These courses are taught across our five faculties, at two campuses, both within walking distance of Liverpool city centre.
We believe that a university education should give you more than an academic qualification - it should give you the skills and experience to take your next steps with confidence. Through placements, internships or live consultancy projects, you can apply the theory you are learning in the classroom to direct action in the workplace.
Some of the facilities on offer here at LJMU include clinical practice suites for nursing, midwifery and paramedic students, mock courtrooms, the UK’s only 360° ship simulator, a television studio and outstanding sports facilities.
Course funding through the Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme
As a service leaver or current member of the Armed Forces, you may be eligible for financial assistance to support your university studies through the Ministry of Defence’s Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) Scheme.
The scheme provides funding for approved courses and financial support can be accessed across up to three financial years. We, Liverpool John Moores University, are an Approved Learning Provider under the scheme and our provider ID number is 1951.
We have a range of undergraduate courses currently registered, including paramedicine, engineering (civil and electrical), policing, business management and environmental health. We also offer postgraduate study in a diverse range of subject areas such as astrophysics, leadership and management, education practice and law (LLB).
If your chosen course of study is not currently on our list of approved courses, please get in contact with us using our contact enquiry form, and we’d be happy to answer questions, alongside any other general questions about the scheme and study with us at LJMU.
For more information on how to apply for funding, visit the Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS) website.
Further support
At LJMU, we have an Armed Forces Champion, Dr Gus Ryrie. Gus served as a Regular and Reserve for a period of 20 years before following a career in higher education. Along with other staff members and current students who are service leavers, they are available to provide advice and guidance on studying at university.
We also have an Outreach team, tasked with widening participation in higher education across a variety of different places and groups, including for the Armed Forces community.
