Our service

Our Clinical Exercise Service compliments NHS care to support your health through safe, personalised exercise. You can access the service by completing this expression of interest online form. LJMU staff and students can also access the service via referral from occupational health, student advice and wellbeing.

We run the service in groups that start at set times. This means you may not be able to begin straight away. If you register your interest, we will contact you when the next start date is available.

What this will look like - Your 12-week journey

  1. Week 1: Health assessment and goal setting

Your programme starts with a detailed appointment with a Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

    This session includes:

    • a health and lifestyle discussion where we talk about your medical history, current health, daily activity, and what you would like to achieve
    • simple physical and wellbeing checks to understand how you move, your current fitness, and how you are feeling
    • goal setting where we agree realistic and personal goals for your programme

This information helps us create an exercise plan that is safe and suited to you.

  2. Weeks 2 to 11: Supported exercise sessions

Over the next ten weeks, you can attend up to two supervised exercise sessions each week. Sessions are led by Clinical Exercise Physiologists and supported by postgraduate students.

    Your programme may include:

    • cardio exercise such as walking, cycling, or step exercises
    • strength exercises using weights, resistance bands, or your own bodyweight
    • functional exercises to improve balance, strength, and confidence in everyday movements
    • adapted exercises for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility

Your programme is reviewed regularly and adjusted as your strength and fitness improve.

  3. Week 12: Review and planning ahead

In your final week, you will:

    • repeat some of the health and fitness checks to see how far you have progressed
    • have a review appointment to talk through your achievements and next steps

Together, we will create a plan to help you stay active after the programme ends. This may include:

    • joining local or community exercise groups
    • returning to the LJMU CEP Clinic for further support
