REMESH Project Seminar Report: AI-Enhanced Disaster Management with Prof Daniel Arias Aranda
On January 20 2025, the REMESH project hosted an insightful seminar led by Prof Daniel Arias Aranda on the topic of “AI-Enhanced Disaster Management: Insights from the Open-Source Intelligence Disaster Event Tracker (ODET)”. The seminar was chaired by Prof Jun Ren (REMESH Co-ordinator). It brought together experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts from the fields of AI, disaster management, and open-source intelligence (OSINT), offering a deeper understanding of how technology can transform disaster response and recovery efforts.
Key insights from the seminar
Prof Jun Ren kicked off the session by discussing the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in disaster management, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize how we prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Prof Arias Aranda then gave 1 hour speech and central to his presentation was the Open-Source Intelligence Disaster Event Tracker (ODET), a tool that uses AI to aggregate and analyse real-time data from publicly available sources. This enables more effective tracking of disaster events, allowing decision-makers to respond swiftly and with better situational awareness.
The seminar highlighted several key applications of AI and OSINT in disaster management, including:
- Real-time event tracking: ODET's AI algorithms can process vast amounts of open-source data to identify and categorize disaster events globally, providing timely updates for emergency responders.
- Improved decision-making: With access to data-driven insights, disaster management teams can prioritize their actions more effectively, reducing response times and improving overall efficiency.
- Future trends: Prof Arias Aranda also outlined emerging trends in AI, such as predictive modeling and risk assessment, which could further enhance disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies.
Participants were particularly interested in how ODET’s AI-driven approach could be integrated into existing disaster response frameworks, and how open-source intelligence could play a more prominent role in real-time decision-making.
The seminar concluded with a lively Q&A session, where attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with Prof Arias Aranda and discuss the practical challenges and potential benefits of using AI in disaster management.
Overall, the seminar was a tremendous success, offering valuable insights into the future of AI-enhanced disaster management. We would like to thank Prof Daniel Arias Aranda for his expert presentation and all participants for their engaging contributions. The REMESH team looks forward to continuing these critical conversations and further exploring the role of AI in improving disaster resilience.
