The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s student mobility programme which provides funding for students as a contribution towards the costs of undertaking international education and training opportunities.
Liverpool John Moores University has received Turing Funding for 2024-25 to support students who wish to undertake an international placement.
Please note:
Funding for Global Citizen (Volunteering) placements is limited, is not guaranteed and is awarded on a competitive basis.
To be eligible for Turing Funding:
- Students must undertake a placement with one of our approved suppliers, for 2024-25 these are Think Pacific, Travelteer, Challenges Abroad and Smaller Earth and Camp Leaders.
- All volunteering placements must last a minimum of 28 days or 4-weeks.
- Volunteering placements must finish by 31 August 2025.
- Students who go on a Global Citizen placement are not covered by Liverpool John Moores University insurance, you must purchase your own insurance before you travel and provide a copy, as proof of purchase, to the Global Opportunities Team.
The Turing Scheme is committed to widening access to study abroad and funding is prioritised to supporting students from less advantaged backgrounds. Students are considered widening participation if they fulfil one of the below criteria:
- Participants with an annual household income of £25,000 or less
- Participants receiving Universal Credit or income-related benefits.
- Care leavers and care experienced students.
- Students who have caring responsibilities for a family member or friend.
- Estranged students.
- Refugees and asylum seekers.
If accepted for Turing Funding, you will receive funding towards the general cost of living, a Maintenance Grant. If you are a widening participation student, you will also receive a Travel Grant.
Maintenance and Cost of Living Grant
The Turing Scheme provides maintenance grants towards the general cost of living abroad. The amount is calculated on a per-day basis and dependent on the destination. Destinations are grouped into 2 categories, Group 1 (higher cost of living), and Group 2 (lower of living).
Group 1: American Samoa, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Tokelau and Niue, Cuba, Israel, Japan, Kiribati, New Caledonia, New Zealand, North America not otherwise specified, Papua New Guinea, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Switzerland, Tonga, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States, Vanuatu, Venezuela.
Any country not listed above will be Group 2.
Maintenance Grant Rates (amount per day)
Placements between 28-56 days
Group 1 destinations: £19 per day
Group 2 destinations: £17 per day
Total daily rate if you meet any of the widening participation criteria
Group 1 destinations: £23 per day
Group 2 destinations: £21 per day
Placements longer than 57 days
Group 1 destinations: £14 per day
Group 2 destinations: £12 per day
Total daily rate if you meet any of the widening participation criteria
Group 1 destinations: £18 per day
Group 2 destinations: £16 per day
Travel Grants
Students who meet the widening participation criteria will be eligible to receive a Travel Grant, the amount is based on the destination country. Below is a list of popular destinations for Global Citizen (Volunteering) Placements and the travel grant amount. If your destination is not listed please visit the Department for Education website for a full list of destinations.

Please note:
Placements can only take place at Liverpool John Moores University approved destinations, and you must always follow Liverpool John Moores University travel regulations and foreign travel advice.
Example
6-week Global Citizen Volunteering placement in Sri Lanka
- A student who is classed as a widening participation student will receive a Travel Grant of £905, plus a Maintenance Grant of £882 (42 days x £21), a total of £1,787
- A student who is not classed as widening participation will not receive a Travel Grant, but will receive a Maintenance Grant of £714 (42 days x £17)
You will receive 100% of the Travel Grant (if eligible) once you have signed the Grant Agreement and sent confirmation of payment of the registration fee to the Provider. You will receive 80% of your Maintenance Grant 2-months prior to the start of your volunteering placement.

The Global Opportunities Team will confirm if you have been awarded funding within ten working days of you submitting your Application Form.
