Engine Room Resource Management
The high-fidelity simulation based Engine Room Resource Management course focuses on the non-technical skills essential to effective resource management, including teamwork, communication, situational awareness, and decision-making within a complex engine room environment.
Offered as a bespoke training programme, this course is delivered exclusively to personnel from a single company. Groups of three to four officers are recommended, with the greatest benefit achieved when delegates represent a range of engineering roles and experience levels across the engine room team.
The course can be combined with engine room resource management course [Link to Engine Room Resource Management course) by joining the bridge and engine room simulators.
Duration: Three days
Prerequisites: Engineer office CoC
Assessment: Continuous monitoring of candidate performance and procedural understanding throughout the course with a final competence check.
Teaching: The candidates are provided with an opportunity to implement leadership and managerial skills for resource management, providing them with an opportunity to gain confidence in adopting a proactive methodical and systematic approach to the management of systems, operations and communications through teamwork.
Accreditation/Approval: Liverpool John Moores University
Course overview
The aim of the training is to prepare delegates in effective engine room resource management procedures. Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:
- understand the key management responsibilities associated with critical stages of vessel operations, including joining a vessel, vessel commissioning, and preparations prior to departure.
- evaluate personal performance, identify areas for improvement, and establish goals to support ongoing professional development.
- promote a culture of continuous improvement that prioritises operational safety, environmental stewardship, emergency readiness, and the achievement of organisational objectives within defined operational boundaries.
- apply structured management techniques to the control of engineering systems, operational activities, and team communications.
- recognise, assess, and mitigate operational risks, including those arising from human performance, behavioural influences, and loss of situational awareness.
- strengthen team capability by effectively supporting less experienced personnel through coaching, pre-task briefings, performance feedback, and post-operation reviews.
- employ systematic approaches to fault finding, troubleshooting, and problem resolution within engine room operations.
- detect emerging error pathways and implement timely interventions to prevent incidents from escalating.
- determine individual and team training requirements to ensure preparedness for routine operations as well as emergency situations.
The delegate’s performance and understanding will be continuously assessed throughout the course. A certificate will be issued by demonstration that the defined objectives have been met.
