Economic and social impact
Independent research has calculated that LJMU delivers more than £470 million of value to the Liverpool City Region economy and almost £900 million to the UK every year.
The report by AMION Consulting (published December 2025) analysed data and carried out surveys to assess the economic and social impact of the university’s activities locally and nationally.
Its findings confirm LJMU as a key driver of economic growth, social mobility and community engagement.
£880 million
Nationally, the university’s activities generate £880 million in gross value added, supporting more than 10,600 jobs across the UK.
£174.6 million
LJMU delivers an estimated £174.6 million in social value each year.
200,000 people
We welcome more than 200,000 people to free LJMU cultural events and activities each year, with a value to our community of £1 million.
£474 million
LJMU’s annual contribution to the city region economy is £474 million, supporting more than 6,218 jobs.
£59.8 million
We generate distributional benefits of £59.8 million linked to improved equality of opportunity for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
1.08 million hours
Our students volunteer 1.08 million hours to good causes each year, worth £11.5 million.
