Going for Gold at Tokyo 2020



Good luck to all our LJMU athletes and sport science staff as they go for medal glory in Japan.

LJMU Olympians

Our homepage features Nikita Parris (football), Emily Borthwick (high jump), Harry Coppell (pole vault) and Niamh Charles (football).

Nikita studied Sports Development in her hometown of Liverpool before turning pro and is now a key attacking player for Team GB. Her quarter-final will be on Friday, July 30.

Emily, a Wigan & District athlete and former LJMU Sport Scholar, competes in the high jump for Team GB on Thursday, 5 August.

Harry Coppell, another former LJMU sport scholar and British universities champion, competes for Team GB in the pole vault on Tuesday, 3 August.

Niamh, a former Liverpool FC player, now at Chelsea, is among the replacements for Team GB and is a sports science graduate.

A special mention also to Jonny Mellor, another former sport scholar who sadly had to pull out of the men’s marathon due to injury.

Sport science and management

Best of luck also to Philip Lew, sport psychologist with Team Malaysia. Phil is one of our Masters graduates.

And to Bev Priestman another sport graduate who is now Head Coach for the Canadian women’s football squad.

Other sport science alumni at the Games include Jill Leckey, sport nutritionist for Australia Cycling, Julian Haigh, sport scientist for USA Football and Sarah Mosley, backroom support for GB Rowing.
