Pioneering craniofacial analysis and depiction in the forensic and digital heritage fields
Face Lab is a collaborative unit that combines art and science to explore facial identity and representation. Comprising academics and PhD researchers, it pioneers innovative craniofacial projects in forensic identification and digital heritage, advancing interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange in heritage, arts, culture, and forensic investigation.

Quality and excellence
Established in 2015 in Liverpool, UK, Face Lab specialises in craniofacial identification research, teaching, and knowledge exchange. The Director Professor Caroline Wilkinson is an internationally renowned forensic expert who was awarded the 2016 Combined Royal Colleges Award for excellence in clinical imaging, is an Accredited Senior Imaging Scientist (ASIS) as well as being a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Royal Society of Edinburgh, Royal Photographic Society and Anatomical Society.
The lab has produced over 75 publications, curated 9 exhibitions, contributed to 35 others, and provided over 85 artifacts to the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum (GLAM) sector, securing more than £2.66M in research and enterprise support.

Innovation and distinctiveness
Face Lab has led the way in innovative interdisciplinary research, education, and knowledge exchange that combines art and science in heritage, arts and culture, and forensic investigation.
In the forensic field, Face Lab pioneers innovative digital craniofacial identification techniques. Contributions include standards for predicting facial features from skeletal analysis, guidance on juvenile age progression, deceased migrant identification and skeletal restitution projects.
As Chartered Forensic Anthropologists, we support national and international forensic investigations. Since 2014, we have contributed to more than 35 forensic cases, leading to the identification of unidentified bodies, and aiding in criminal convictions.

Forensic research
We analyse, authenticate, and depict the faces of key historical figures from skeletal remains, death masks, and portraits. Our work has significantly influenced current research in digital human representation, particularly in developing 3D facial avatars.
Face Lab has contributed innovative insights to more than 60 historical/archaeological projects producing more than 100 facial depictions since 2014.
