Information for new postgraduate taught students

You can complete your student registration after you have received an email from us confirming your place at LJMU. All information about how to do this is on our Before You arrive webpages.

You will need your student ID number from your email to complete your registration.

If you are a returning LJMU student moving onto a postgraduate course, you will still need to register online but you will be able to use your existing My LJMU account to complete your registration.

Once you have completed your online registration, including uploading a photo for your student ID card, your ID card will be processed. For students starting their studies in September 2026, if you complete your registration before midnight on Friday 4 September 2026 your student ID card will be automatically printed and dispatched to your home address via Royal Mail tracked delivery.

If you complete registration after Friday 4 September 2026, you will need to collect your student ID card at one of our pop-up card collection hubs on campus from Thursday 10 September 2026.

Further details for student ID card collection are as follows:

• Card collection opens on Thursday 10 September until Friday 2 October 2026, from 8am to 6pm, weekdays only, at the Tithebarn Building, James Parsons Building, Redmonds Building and Student Life Building.
• Card collection hubs will be open over the main moving in weekend on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026, from 10am to 4pm, at the Tithebarn Building and Student Life Building.

Collection for early starting programmes

• Legal Practice Course (LPC) students will be able to collect their student ID cards on Tuesday 1 September 2026 at the Redmonds Building.
• PGCE teaching students will be able to collect their student ID cards on Monday 7 September 2026 at the Student Life Building.

Information about student ID cards for postgraduate taught students starting their studies in January 2027 will be released towards the end of 2026. If your course starts at another time of year, you will be contacted directly about arrangements to get your student ID card.

If you are joining LJMU in autumn 2026, most postgraduate taught students will start their courses the week commencing Monday 21 September (Week 1 of our academic calendar).

You can access your general programme timetable on the Timetables platform from Friday 4 September.

Your personal timetable will be added to your My LJMU account under MyTimetable once you are fully enrolled on all your modules during the week commencing Monday 14 September.

University sessions for Legal Practice Course (LPC) students will start on Tuesday 8 September.

Further information regarding your student registration will be sent to you via email from Wednesday 5 August.

Student ID cards will be issued and posted to students who uploaded a ID card photo prior to Thursday 27 August.

There will also be a student ID card collection hub open for LPC students in the Redmonds building on Tuesday 1 September. Further information regarding these ID card collection arrangements will be sent via email.

Start dates

University sessions for all teacher training students will start week beginning Monday 7 September.

Please note:
School Led students should contact their Lead Partners to confirm arrangements for the period from 1 to 4 September 2026 as the teaching term starts the week before university sessions start.

Timetables

Draft timetables for each 2026/27 programme can be found on our teacher training webpages. These provide an overview of how your course will be structured, highlight key dates and when you’ll be based at university or on placement in schools. Individual school holidays vary and we advise students never to book travel until they can confirm the specific term dates for their placement schools.

Induction

All university days are 9am to 4pm and arrangements for your first week induction will be updated nearer the start of the programme. Please bring your student ID card with you. Once you have completed registration, you should receive your student ID card through the post, but there will be the option to collect your student ID card on Monday 7 September at the Student Life Building if you have not received yours in the post.

If you are joining in LJMU in winter 2027, most postgraduate taught students will start their courses the week commencing Monday 25 January. You will receive email communications regarding your timetable at the end of 2026.

We would love you to join us at our postgraduate induction event on campus on Friday 11 September 2026, from 10am to 5pm. Your invitation and further information about what’s on offer will be sent to you by email.

Join us for a welcome fair, take part in sport activities in our Sport Building, plus enjoy free food and drinks available throughout the day.

You don’t need to register in advance for the event. Simply drop in with your student ID card to access the event.

As part of your course, your programme team may organise an induction session ahead of the start of teaching.

You may be contacted by your programme team over the summer with further details, or any scheduled sessions will be available to view on your general programme timetable.

If you are self-funding your tuition fees, including using a government loan, then you will be able to pay your tuition fees using our secure online payment methods.

You will have been sent information regarding your tuition fee amount when you received your offer to study with LJMU.

If your course starts in September 2026, you will receive your invoice in October 2026 to confirm your tuition fees. If you are eligible for the Alumni Discount Award or scholarship, this will not be reflected on your invoice. You will be able to see your discounted tuition fee total on the 'My Fees' section of your My LJMU account.

If your course starts at another time of year, you will receive your invoice a few days after you have completed your online student registration and selected your modules.

If you are a postgraduate international student, please visit the international student offer holder webpages for guidance on paying your tuition fees.

For courses due to start in Winter 2027, you will receive your invoice when your course commences.

You can set up an instalment plan to pay your fees throughout the duration of your studies. More information is available on our online payments webpage under the section – ‘Pay your fees – Instalment plan’.

You are exempt from paying council tax whilst you study as a full-time student.

To be eligible for council tax exemption you must be on a full-time course for a period of more than 24 weeks. Your eligibility will also depend on whom you live with. If someone in your household isn’t a current full-time university student, they will have to pay council tax.

Council tax exemption forms can be requested through the My Services section of your My LJMU account.

Support doesn’t just start from the beginning of your course, it starts now, so contact the team as soon as possible to make sure we can be on hand to help you.

We offer a free counselling service for all students, based in our Student Life Building and James Parsons Building, providing support for personal challenges as well as help with your academic life.

The counselling team follows the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Codes of Ethics, and LJMU is an Organisational Member of the BACP.

The Mount Pleasant Campus offers facilities for quiet meditation, prayer, and contemplation on the ground floor of the John Foster Building, in G19. On the City Campus, a multi-faith room is available in room 3.21A in the James Parsons Building every day, and Friday Prayers are held in room 2.05 of the Peter Jost Building. We also have a quiet reflection room in 1.39B in the James Parsons Building for those seeking peace and stillness during the day.

Liverpool also offers multiple faith spaces not connected to LJMU, and you can find a full list on our spirituality webpages.

All students, including postgraduate students, are welcome to join our sports teams and societies. You can look at the range of sports and society groups on the John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU) website.

We have postgraduate study areas across our campuses, including a postgraduate study room in our City Campus library, a bookable postgraduate study room on the upper ground floor of our Student Life Building, and the ground floor of our Pavillion on the Mount Pleasant Campus. These will all be accessible using your student ID card.

Our Student Futures team are available to help you find work opportunities during and after your studies. They are available for 1-2-1 appointments throughout the year and run a variety of careers focused workshops too.

We also have an on-campus agency called Unitemps, who provide part-time work and internship opportunities for our students. Working for Unitemps allows you to manage your hours around your studies, plus gain some great experience, with part-time work often available for the university such as on open days or as student ambassadors.
