Information for new postgraduate taught students

You can complete your student registration after you have received an email from us confirming your place at LJMU. All information about how to do this is on our Before You Arrive webpages.

You will need your student ID number from your email to complete your registration.

If you are a returning LJMU student moving onto a postgraduate course, you will still need to register online but you will be able to use your existing My LJMU account to complete your registration.

Once you have completed your online registration, including uploading a photo for your student ID card, your ID card will be processed. If you start your course in January 2026 and complete your registration before midnight on Thursday 18 December 2025 your student ID card will be automatically printed and dispatched to your permanent home address via Royal Mail tracked delivery.

If you complete registration after Thursday 18 December 2025, you will need to collect your student ID card at one of our pop-up card collection hubs on campus from Monday 5 January 2026.

Card collection opens on Monday 5 January until Monday 26 January 2026, from 9am to 4pm, weekdays only, at the Tithebarn Building and Student Life Building.

Information about student ID cards for postgraduate taught students starting their studies in September 2026 will be released in the summer. If your course starts at another time of year, you will be contacted directly about arrangements to get your student ID card.

If you are joining LJMU in Winter 2026, most postgraduate taught students will start their courses the week commencing 26 January.

You can access your general programme timetable on the Timetables platform.

Your personal timetable will be added to your My LJMU account under MyTimetable once you are fully enrolled on all your modules.

If you are self-funding your tuition fees, including using a government loan, then you will be able to pay your tuition fees using our secure online payment methods.

You will have been sent information regarding your tuition fee amount when you received your offer to study with LJMU.

If your course starts in Winter 2025, you will receive your invoice when your course commences. If you are eligible for the Alumni Discount Award or scholarship, this will not be reflected on your invoice. You will be able to see your discounted tuition fee total on the 'My Fees' section of your My LJMU account.

If your course starts at another time of year, you will receive your invoice a few days after you have completed your online student registration and selected your modules.

You can set up an instalment plan to pay your fees throughout the duration of your studies. More information is available on our online payments webpage under the section – ‘Pay your fees – Instalment plan’.

You are exempt from paying council tax whilst you study as a full-time student.

To be eligible for council tax exemption you must be on a full-time course for a period of more than 24 weeks. Your eligibility will also depend on whom you live with. If someone in your household isn’t a current full-time university student, they will have to pay council tax.

Council tax exemption forms can be requested through the My Services section of your My LJMU account.

Support doesn’t just start from the beginning of your course, it starts now, so contact the team as soon as possible to make sure we can be on hand to help you.

We offer a free counselling service for all students, based in our Student Life Building, providing support for personal challenges as well as help with your academic life.

The counselling team follows the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Codes of Ethics, and LJMU is an Organisational Member of the BACP.

The Mount Pleasant Campus offers facilities for quiet meditation, prayer, and contemplation in the Student Life Building. On the City Campus, a multi-faith room is available in 3.21A of the James Parsons Building, and Friday Prayers are held in room 2.05 of the Peter Jost Lecture Theatre.

All students, including postgraduate students, are welcome to join our sports teams and societies. You can look at the range of sports and society groups on the John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU) website.

We have postgraduate study areas in our Student Life Building, Redmonds Building and James Parsons Building, as well as on the first floor of the Pavilion at our Mount Pleasant Campus Library, that are all accessible using your student ID card.

Our Student Futures team are available to help you find work opportunities during and after your studies. They are available for 1-2-1 appointments throughout the year and run a variety of careers focused workshops too.

We also have an on-campus agency called Unitemps, who provide part-time work and internship opportunities for our students. Working for Unitemps allows you to manage your hours around your studies, plus gain some great experience, with part-time work often available for the university such as on open days or as student ambassadors.
